Netflix plans to limit account sharing from the beginning of 2023. The move follows speculation that the password sharing feature from the company will be restricted by the end of 2022.
According to MacRumors, account sharing is a feature announced by Netflix under the name Profile Transfer that is intended to allow users of other people’s Netflix accounts to transfer their profile data such as personalized recommendations, viewing history, playlists, and more. private books, saved games, and other settings.
Simply put, if a user doesn’t have a Netflix membership but is currently watching Netflix content through someone else’s account profile, it can be experienced as a paid account. This has made the above feature the most requested by users.
Netflix has acknowledged that password sharing has had a negative impact on the business, but has yet to take any action. So, starting in 2023, the company plans to ask people who share an account with people who don’t live in the same house to pay to do so. The company has tested additional payments for password sharing in several Latin American countries for an additional $3. In these countries, the primary account owner must provide a verification code to anyone outside of the household who wants to access the account, which Netflix repeatedly asks for.
The company will enforce password-sharing rules through IP address, device ID, and account activity. In order to prevent customers from alienating the service, Netflix may gradually phase out password sharing instead of stopping it immediately.
