Siri used to “fever”, leading the smart virtual assistant trend since its launch, but in recent years, the program has not made any significant progress.
There are a lot of things Siri can’t understand when users give commands. With the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT or smart chatbots recently, it is clear that Apple’s virtual assistant is “no door” in the same ranks in terms of request processing ability as well as the level of smart chatbots. flexible.
When users say “Hey Siri” to wake up the virtual assistant on the HomePod speaker or iPhone and ask a question, the system will generate an answer in the form of a voice. But in some situations, Siri does not understand the content of the question and responds with an apology. In contrast, AI-integrated chatbot technology sublimates and changes dynamically.
According to John Burkey, a former engineer who worked in the voice assistant business at Apple, Siri is built on a huge database of words. This virtual assistant “understands” the words contained in the built-in system. If a word from the user’s voice command doesn’t exist in the database, Siri won’t know how to respond. And that block of data makes the system difficult to process, according to Burkey.
“A simple update, such as adding a phrase to a data plan, also requires a complete rebuild of the database. This can take up to 6 weeks to complete. Complex features are also available. As complex as a search engine, it takes almost a year,” Burkey explained.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT or similar AI systems are developed from the behavior of using human language. Artificial intelligence uses machine learning technology to absorb and understand how to respond. That system isn’t perfect, but the overall results are still far more understanding than a command-and-control model like Siri.
After years of being “on top” of the virtual assistant market, Apple is not completely asleep. Recently, there have been reports that the Cupertino (USA) based company is developing a more complex voice processing system. “Many engineers, including the Siri team, are testing prototype language generation models every week,” the NYT reports.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple is testing a new natural language generator feature for Siri. It is expected that the company will test the new change on tvOS 16.4 Beta and will soon expand to other device lines of the Apple ecosystem.
