Netflix said it will begin notifying people who are sharing accounts between households about the fees.
According to The Guardian, Netflix has expanded its blocking of account password sharing in the US and over 100 other countries, warning users that accounts cannot be shared for free outside of the household.
The video streaming leader has been looking for new ways to make money in the face of signs of market saturation. The latest effort includes limiting password lending and a new ad-supported option
Netflix said it is sending emails about account sharing to customers in 103 countries and territories, including the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. accounts should only be used The information in the email states that Netflix is in one household. Paying customers can add a member outside of their homes for an additional fee. In the US, there is an additional fee of 8 USD per month.
Members can also transfer a person’s profile so the user can keep their watch history and recommendations on Netflix. Last year, the video streaming service said it would limit account sharing and was testing different approaches in some markets.
Netflix estimates that more than 100 million households have provided their login information to other friends and family. As of the end of March, Netflix had 232.5 million paying customers globally.
Under the new policy, people in the same household can continue to share a Netflix account and can use it on multiple devices while traveling. The move comes as Netflix faces pressure to compete with other streaming services, including Max and Amazon
