Google is making some changes to help Chromebooks last longer.
Chrome OS team Google has announced it will increase its commitments to the operating system. Currently, Chromebook computers receive automatic updates every 4 weeks for 8 years. These updates are often about security and stability as well as new features.
But starting in 2024, Chromebooks released after 2021 will receive regular automatic updates for up to 10 years. For those who purchase a Chromebook computer before 2021, they will be given the option to renew automatically for up to 10 years after receiving the last update
The team’s announcement also mentioned an upcoming power-saving feature. In the coming months, Google will roll out adaptive charging to Chromebooks similar to Pixel phones. This feature helps extend battery life by extending charging time-based on the user’s usage cycle.
Chromebooks will also have a battery-saving feature that Google says will help reduce or turn off power-hungry processes. Not long ago, Google also launched a feature that helps Google Photos on Chromebooks have the ability to create videos from images uploaded to this cloud platform.
Reasonable prices and a long-term update policy are how Google hopes to retain users with the Chrome OS platform. The search giant itself has provided Chromebooks to employees as their default devices.
According to Gartner, ChromeOS’s market share has decreased significantly from 2020 to 2022, accounting for only 6.8% of the worldwide PC market in 2022 and specifically 19.7% in the US.
