NVIDIA has acknowledged a design error in their latest Blackwell AI chip, which has impacted production timelines. At the recent launch event for the Gefion supercomputer in Denmark, CEO Jensen Huang confirmed the issue but stated that it has been resolved with the assistance of partner TSMC.
Huang emphasized that while the design error does not affect the actual functionality of the Blackwell chip, it has significantly hindered productivity. He took full responsibility for the error and clarified that it had not caused any tensions between NVIDIA and TSMC.
During the event, Huang lauded TSMC for their rapid support in resolving the productivity challenges and reinstating Blackwell production effectively. The Blackwell chip features dual silicon dies and is designed to deliver 30 times faster performance compared to its predecessor, particularly in AI tasks such as chatbot responses. The chips are anticipated to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of this year.
Despite the resolution of the design error, NVIDIA’s stock price fell approximately 2% during the first trading session following the announcement.
