Google has introduced a new feature called ‘Scam Detection’ within its Phone app to help users avoid falling victim to scam calls. According to TechRadar, this feature aims to alleviate concerns about phone scams by utilizing advanced artificial intelligence tools.
The Scam Detection feature employs AI to analyze the audio of incoming calls in real time. If it identifies potential signs of fraud, the app promptly alerts the user through sound, vibration, and on-screen notifications. For instance, if a caller pretends to be a bank representative and attempts to pressure the user into transferring money, the Scam Detection system will recognize the deceitful nature of the call and notify the user immediately.
At present, Scam Detection is available exclusively for users of Pixel 6 and later models in the United States who are part of the beta version of the Phone app. Google has indicated plans to expand this feature to other Android devices soon.
An important aspect of Scam Detection is that the entire analysis process is conducted on the device, ensuring user privacy by not transmitting any data to the cloud. The upcoming Pixel 9 models will utilize the integrated Gemini Nano chip for processing, while earlier models will leverage Google’s robust machine-learning capabilities.
This new feature adds significant value to the Phone app’s security offerings, complementing existing tools like Call Screen, which allows automated systems to handle calls for verification before the user answers.
To use the Scam Detection feature during its current beta phase, users must actively enable it in the app settings. Google is also encouraging feedback on the feature’s performance to refine it prior to its official launch.
