Apple plans to release a third-generation iPhone SE in the first quarter of 2022, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce.
If that timeline turns out to be correct, we can expect the device to hit the market by the end of March. As previous rumors hinted, TrendForce said the new iPhone SE will remain a mid-range smartphone with additional 5G support:
“In terms of product development, Apple maintains its plan to launch its third generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22. The third generation iPhone SE is expected to be a major instrument in helping Apple establish a presence in the mid-range 5G smartphone market segment. Its production volume for 2022 is expected to reach 25 to 30 million units. ”
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously claimed that the new iPhone SE will have a design similar to the current model, which is based on the iPhone 8, with a 4.7-inch screen, a button of Touch ID welcome and thicker edges. Kuo said key device upgrades will include support for 5G and a faster processor – apparently an A15 chip.
There are also rumors that Apple is working on a larger version of the iPhone SE, but this device is not expected to hit the market until 2023 or later. The “real” new generation, the one that will sport a new design to the iPhone XR but with a screen between 5.7 and 6.1 inches and still Touch ID somewhere, would have been postponed to 2024.
The original iPhone SE was released in March 2016 and was discontinued in September 2018. The second-generation iPhone SE launched in April 2020 and continues to sell, with prices set at $ 489 for 64GB of storage.
