According to Engadget, the Apple M1 Ultra is essentially two M1 Max together, making it a more suitable choice for creative-intensive applications like video editing and 3D image creation.
At the event on March 9, Apple revealed that the M1 Max chips have a secret feature: a die-to-die connector called “UltraFusion,” which allows it to connect multiple chips to one another. together. In theory, it’s similar to AMD’s Infinity Fabric, which ensures fast communication between the CPU, GPU, and other components.
Apple says the UltraFusion connection can handle up to 2.5 terabytes of bandwidth per second, so it shouldn’t result in any performance slowdowns between the two connected M1 Max chips. All in all, the M1 Ultra has a whopping 114 billion transistors and it supports up to 128 GB of memory with a bandwidth of 800 GB/s.
Its specs are basically what happens when you combine two M1 Max chips: The Ultra has a 20-core CPU (16 high-performance cores and four high-performance cores) and a 64-core GPU. The company claims the chip offers eight times faster graphics than the original M1 chip.
