Alienware is about to launch the cheapest 34-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor

Dell’s Alienware display using quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED) technology from Samsung will launch this spring at an unexpected price of $1,299.

According to Engadget, this information was announced by Dell in a tweet that the company has just posted on Twitter. The company first announced the 34-inch curved gaming monitor at CES, promising extreme contrast, brightness, color gamut, and improved uniformity.

While not cheap, other OLED displays are still much more expensive, such as LG’s 32-inch UltraFine OLED model for $3,999, or the 27-inch UltraFine for $2,999. However, the Alienware model has specs designed for gamers rather than content creators, with 3,440 x 1,440 pixels resolution, 175 Hz refresh rate, 99.3% DCI-P3 color gamut, ratio contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and brightness of 250 nits with a peak of 1,000 nits. It also supports HDR, following the minimum DisplayHDR True Black 400 standard for OLED displays.

Samsung’s QD-OLED technology uses blue organic light-emitting diodes that pass through quantum dots to produce red and green colors. This is different from standard OLEDs, which use blue and yellow OLED compounds. Blue color has the strongest light energy, so in theory, QD-OLED offers higher brightness and efficiency. In addition, QD-OLED screens also have other advantages such as longer life, wider viewing angles and less burn-in ability.

How QD-OLED works has not been clearly demonstrated because this is a new technology . This will manifest further when Alienware monitors hit the market in the spring and Sony’s 55-inch and 65-inch QD-OLED Bravia TVs arrive in the not-too-distant future.
