According to GizChina, it is not surprising that technology devices lose value over time. As new technological advancements are constantly being made, an old device quickly becomes obsolete and depreciates drastically. To explore depreciation for tech products in 2022, smartphone and tech exchange comparison website SellCell has compiled a report on equipment depreciation through the end of 2022.
SellCell compared data from devices from Google, Samsung, and Apple, with various other technology devices, including tablets, smartphones, game consoles, and smartwatches.
The products with the highest retained value compared to the original value, as of December 2022, in smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and game consoles belonged to iPhone 13 Pro Max (down 44.6%), respectively. iPad Pro (56.7%), Apple Watch Series 7 45 mm aluminum (71.2% off), and Sony PlayStation 5 (25% off). Meanwhile, the products that depreciate the most compared to their original value, as of December 2022, in the fields of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and game consoles are Google Pixel XL 2016 (down 98.6%), respectively. Galaxy Tab A 10.5 2018 (94.8%), Galaxy Watch3 45mm (down 95.6%), and Nintendo Switch Lite (65% off).
In most categories, Apple is the leader. On average, iPhone depreciation across all models is around 68.8%, down from 58.7% in January 2022. Similarly, the iPad has depreciated by an average of 67.9%.
With Samsung, the same cannot be said for its smartphone models, with the average depreciation of all models at around 84.2%. In January 2022, the number was as high as 76.4%. Samsung tablets have also lost 84.3% in value. Similarly, Google’s Pixel line of phones has an average depreciation rate of 89.5%.
Notably, unlike smartphones, smartwatches as a whole have depreciated significantly regardless of manufacturer, with Apple Watch models dropping about 83.3% from launch value, while Samsung’s smartwatches fell. 87.9%.
