It has been reported that a significant data breach has resulted in the exposure of approximately 3 billion records online. According to BGR, the breach affects a vast number of American records, including sensitive data such as Social Security numbers (SSNs). The information is believed to have been stolen from National Public Data, a provider of public records data, in April 2024.
The breach was brought to light when hackers, using the alias ‘Fenice,’ posted 2.9 billion records on the cybercrime forum Breach Forums. These records contain extensive personal details, including full names, addresses, city, county, state, ZIP codes, and SSNs. SSNs, in particular, are highly sensitive and can be used by cybercriminals to engage in identity theft, open fraudulent credit accounts, borrow money, or file bogus tax returns.
Experts have noted that this breach ranks among the largest ever and presents a significant threat to millions of Americans. Victims may face financial losses, damage to their credit scores, and protracted legal issues as a result.
As of now, National Public Data has not stated the incident. However, the parent company of Jerico Pictures, Inc., is currently facing a lawsuit related to its alleged failure to adequately safeguard users’ personal information.
In light of this breach, experts advise Americans to remain vigilant against online fraud and to regularly monitor their credit reports for any signs of suspicious activity.
