Apple chose Foxconn and Lenovo to develop an AI server based on Apple Silicon

Apple is enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure by partnering with Foxconn and Lenovo for the manufacturing of AI server systems utilizing Apple Silicon Chips in Taiwan. This strategic decision aims to mitigate supply chain risks and decrease reliance on factories in China amidst ongoing challenges within the technology supply chain.

The company’s goal is to leverage Apple Silicon to build AI server systems that will serve advanced hardware infrastructure. By collaborating with Foxconn, a well-established contract electronics manufacturer that has partnered with Nvidia on various AI initiatives, Apple aims to benefit from its expertise in AI server production. The partnership involves Foxconn and its subsidiary, LCFC, producing the servers in Taiwan, which allows for tighter control of the manufacturing process.

While Apple remains a major player in the technology sector, it is positioning itself differently from competitors like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Rather than focusing on training GPU models for machine learning, Apple is concentrating on enhancing internal AI inference capabilities for its devices. Recently, the company introduced Apple Intelligence, a suite of generative AI tools aimed at improving the user experience across the iPhone, iPad, and macOS platforms.

Though Apple has not yet reached the production scale of its competitors in the AI infrastructure market, the company anticipates that its Apple Silicon-based servers will effectively meet its internal needs. The collaboration with Foxconn and Lenovo allows Apple to manage smaller production volumes, aligning with its current infrastructure requirements.
