Apple delays iPhone with Face ID hidden under the screen

It seems that the launch of iPhones with under-display Face ID technology might be delayed. According to a report from South Korea’s The Elec, Apple is reportedly holding off on the release due to the current technology not meeting their strict requirements for quality and stability. The under-display Face ID is seen as a significant advancement in achieving a true full-screen experience on iPhones, but integrating this technology comes with technical challenges, particularly in ensuring accurate and reliable 3D facial recognition performance.

Apple is not satisfied with the current technology from Samsung and LG, two potential screen suppliers for the iPhone. They are seeking image quality and recognition capabilities equivalent to traditional Face ID, and are looking for multiple suppliers to produce screens with this technology to ensure a stable supply and reduce costs.

This delay means that the iPhone 17, expected to launch next year, may not be equipped with under-display Face ID as previously rumored. However, this decision reflects Apple’s commitment to prioritizing quality and user experience over following trends. Despite this setback, under-display Face ID remains a goal for Apple, with ongoing research into integrating this technology into both traditional iPhones and future folding products.
