“Apple Devices Among the Most Vulnerable to Rapidly Growing Malware Threats”

The threat of malware is constantly increasing, and even Apple devices are not safe from this menace. As per a report by VPN security company Surfshark, viruses constitute the most common type of malware, accounting for 42% of all malware detected since the start of 2023. Interestingly, Apple devices have been specifically targeted by a virus called ‘Proxy. Agent’, which has shattered the popular notion that Apple’s system is immune to malware attacks.

The report, based on data from users of Surfshark Antivirus, reveals that up to 117 types of malware were discovered in the first three months of 2024 alone. Out of these, five main types make up nearly 80% of all threats. The most common among these is the Proxy. Agent virus, which primarily targets Apple devices, raises concerns about the security of this ecosystem.

The second most common type is information-stealing malware, commonly known as Trojans. The most popular strain of Trojan is Dropper. Gen, which installs additional malware and adware while disguising itself as a legitimate process on the Windows system. Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUA) make up another type of malware often installed accidentally by users while installing other applications. PUAs can cause constant pop-ups, unwanted settings changes, and system slowdowns.

Heuristics, which are viruses that have similar characteristics to other common virus variants, constitute another common type of malware. Heuristics are detected by analyzing the code and scanning for similar functions to malware. However, they can disguise themselves and create false alerts. Lastly, Adware is a type of malware that specializes in distributing ads. Adware displays pop-up ads on the browser, tricking users into downloading other malware and sharing sensitive information.

The Surfshark report serves as a warning to all users about the dangers of malware. It is crucial to remain vigilant, use reputable anti-virus software, and regularly update the system to protect your devices from malware attacks.
