Apple does not have to pay OpenAI to use ChatGPT

Apple recently announced a collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT directly into Siri for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. The goal is to enhance Siri’s responses in relevant scenarios.

A noteworthy report from Bloomberg revealed that neither Apple nor OpenAI will make direct cash payments as part of this partnership. Instead, Apple plans to leverage its vast number of devices to promote OpenAI’s brand and technology, considering it to be of equivalent or greater value than monetary payments.

As for OpenAI, the increasing usage of ChatGPT by Apple device users will require additional computing power and budget from the company. However, OpenAI could potentially benefit from the partnership by encouraging Apple users to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month, with the possibility of receiving a commission for sign-ups through Apple devices.

Moreover, Apple intends to boost its AI-related earnings through revenue-sharing agreements with partners. It has been reported that Apple is in discussions to offer Google’s Gemini chatbot as an alternative option, which is expected to be implemented later this year.

The report also stated that Apple aims to capture a portion of the revenue generated from monetizing chatbot results on its operating system. This shift could potentially reduce the substantial revenue that Apple currently receives from search deals with Google.

Furthermore, the report mentioned that Apple has not yet finalized an agreement with a local Chinese supplier for chatbot features. Baidu and Alibaba are among the potential partners being considered for this purpose.
