Apple is dedicated to enhancing the durability and reliability of its devices, such as the iPhone, by subjecting them to rigorous testing in laboratories. These tests simulate extreme conditions, including intense heat and cold, to ensure that the products can function optimally under any circumstances.
To achieve this, Apple has recently inaugurated its largest research and development laboratory outside the US, located in Shenzhen province, China. With an impressive area of 20,000 square meters, the lab is expected to house 1,000 employees from both domestic and international backgrounds. This significant investment of approximately $138 million underscores Apple’s commitment to testing its products in extreme conditions to assess their performance.
The primary mission of the new lab is to research and test new materials and manufacturing techniques to ensure that flagship products like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro can withstand harsh conditions, from high to very low temperatures. By rigorously testing products before launch, Apple aims to demonstrate their durability and ruggedness convincingly.
An example of this approach is the Apple Watch Ultra, which has undergone rigorous testing in similar laboratories. Testing plays a significant role in Apple’s marketing campaigns, showcasing the products’ ability to withstand challenging conditions.
The decision to establish a laboratory in China aligns with Apple’s efforts to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on production in China. This move reflects the company’s confidence in the research and development capabilities in this country, particularly in the vicinity of many of its suppliers, which saves time and shipping costs.
Despite this expansion, China will continue to play a crucial role in Apple’s production chain, and the new facility in Shenzhen will contribute to the ongoing improvement of Apple products to meet high consumer expectations for performance and durability.
