Apple shakes hands with OpenAI, Microsoft is worried about ‘fever’

Apple has been in discussions with OpenAI since mid-2023 to incorporate GPT technology into iOS 18, aiming to enhance the capabilities of its virtual assistant, Siri. This collaboration aims to enable Siri to handle more complex queries and potentially transform into a chatbot. Apple engineers have already seen promising results by integrating ChatGPT with Siri, improving its contextual understanding and ability to provide accurate responses. Additionally, Apple is working on developing its language model to handle simpler tasks offline.

This collaboration has raised concerns for Microsoft, as Apple’s advancements in AI may directly compete with Microsoft’s AI products. Furthermore, Apple’s potential increase in server demands from OpenAI could impact Microsoft’s operations. While Apple has also explored a partnership with Google for its Gemini technology, OpenAI seems the preferred partner.

Apple is expected to unveil the new AI features of iOS 18 at the WWDC 2024 developer conference on June 10.
