Google has introduced a new feature in the Gmail app for Android and iOS to help users identify verified senders and reduce the risk of falling victim to phishing scams. The app will now display a green check mark next to verified senders, indicating they are trustworthy. This feature is intended to make it more difficult for scammers to impersonate known brands and deceive users.
To qualify as a verified sender, the sender must apply Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) and have a trademark registered with a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC). This helps ensure that the domain name used is legitimate and belongs to the company it claims to represent.
In cases where a sender has a Common Marker Certificate (CMC) but not a VMC, the Gmail app will display the sender’s profile picture without the verified check mark.
It’s important to note that the verified sender check mark will only appear in the official Gmail app, and users will not see this icon if they are using a third-party email app on Android or iOS.
This feature will be gradually rolled out to Android and iOS users over the next few weeks, so users should ensure they are using the latest app version to see the change.
