A widespread issue with the Chrome password manager on Windows recently caused difficulties for millions of users trying to access their saved passwords. The problem occurred between July 24 and July 25 and was attributed to changes within the product that lacked appropriate protection features. Google has acknowledged the issue and issued an apology to affected users.
The problem specifically affected users of version M127 of the Chrome browser on Windows, preventing access to saved passwords. It is estimated to have impacted around 2% of Chrome users worldwide, equivalent to 15 million accounts.
In response to the issue, Google recommended that users contact technical support and update their Chrome browser to the latest version. However, this solution has faced criticism for being challenging for users without technical knowledge.
While the issue has been resolved, it serves as a reminder that relying solely on browser password management can pose risks. Users should consider alternative password management solutions and have backup measures in place in case of browser-related problems.
