Google is set to introduce a new AI feature for Android users that will alert them about potential scam calls. This feature, provided by Gemini Nano, an AI model developed by Google, will be available on the Pixel 8 series and the Galaxy S24. The AI will monitor phone calls in real-time and display an on-screen alert if it detects suspicious activity.
According to Google, the new feature aims to protect users from common phone scams, helping them avoid financial losses. It will alert users if it detects unusual noises during a call, such as a bank representative requesting urgent money transfers, gift card payments, or soliciting personal information like card PINs or passwords.
Google assures users that real-time call processing will occur on their devices, ensuring that the content of the conversation does not leave the device. This feature is similar to the previously existing Live Caption feature for calls, meaning that only the user’s device has access to the call data, not Google or any third party.
The fraud call alerts will be optional, and Google plans to share more information about the feature later this year, possibly upon its official launch. Initially, the feature will likely be available on the Pixel line with Gemini Nano before expanding to other Android devices.
