Google has introduced updates for the Google Maps and Waze iPhone apps, which include parking suggestions and alerts for various types of speed cameras. Despite having acquired mapping company Waze over a decade ago, Google continues to integrate Waze’s features into its own Google Maps as separate applications for both Android and iOS, with new features taking several months to roll out.
According to Google’s blog, users of Google Maps on iOS and Android can now report crashes, and the update is compatible with CarPlay and Android Auto. The reporting icons on the app have been made more visible and easier to use, allowing users to quickly share updates, such as blocked lanes causing traffic jams. Other drivers can confirm the incident with a tap, enabling following drivers to proactively avoid it.
Google Maps is also introducing new features for iOS and Android to enhance destination navigation. As users approach their destination, the app will highlight nearby parking lots and automatically illuminate buildings and entrances as they get closer.
Waze and Google Maps apps are receiving updates separately, with Waze’s exclusive updates including a new camera alert system. Users will now receive warnings when approaching cameras monitoring behaviors such as speeding, running red lights, driving in the wrong lane, not wearing a seat belt, or using a phone while driving. The data is sourced from Waze community members, and Google will promote this information more prominently to encourage continued user contributions.
In addition, Waze users can now share real-time traffic information and receive useful details such as the cause of road closures or real-time traffic conditions. Android users will soon be able to access the lock screen navigation feature, while iOS users can expect this feature to be available in the next fall update.
While Waze is available in CarPlay, Google has not confirmed if these features will be included in that version.
