Google suggests how AI will push science further

In recent discussions, Google has highlighted the potential benefits that artificial intelligence (AI) could offer to various fields in the future. According to their latest report, AI is making significant contributions to research and development, particularly in the realm of science. Here are four key areas where AI is demonstrating its value:

  1. Enhanced Understanding of the Human Brain: Over the past decade, AI has played a crucial role in brain research, notably through Google’s collaboration with the Lichtman Lab at Harvard. This partnership has enabled researchers to map a small segment of the brain with remarkable detail, uncovering previously unseen areas and enhancing our understanding of neural structures.
  2. Flood Prediction: AI technology is also proving invaluable in predicting floods. Google’s flood prevention initiative, which began in 2018, focuses on developing an AI model that can reliably forecast extreme river events. The goal is to deploy this model across 100 countries, potentially benefiting around 700 million people by improving preparedness for flooding.
  3. Forest Fire Detection: Recent advancements in AI have made the detection of forest fires more efficient. A joint effort between Google Research and the US Forest Service has resulted in an AI model that can identify forest fires and generate high-resolution imagery within a mere 20 minutes. Additionally, Google Maps has incorporated a feature that provides fire warnings to users.
  4. Advancements in Mathematical Reasoning: In the realm of mathematics, AI is making strides with systems like AlphaGeometry 2, which can solve complex geometric problems. Google reports that this model, in conjunction with AlphaProof, has successfully tackled 83% of the problems presented in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) over the past 25 years.

These applications illustrate the immense potential of AI to contribute to scientific research and enhance the quality of life across various domains.
