Apple is in the process of transitioning from Lightning to USB-C. Currently, 7 official Lightning port devices are still being sold in the market. These include iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone SE, and Magic accessories such as Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and the first generation Apple Pencil. However, it is expected that these products will be phased out as Apple moves entirely to USB-C ports.
This transition is aimed at streamlining Apple’s product ecosystem, especially after the recent launches of iPhone 16, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max, all of which feature USB-C ports. The upcoming generation of iPhone SE, set to launch next year, is also expected to adopt this port, while the production of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will cease next September. Additionally, the Magic accessories are anticipated to be updated with USB-C ports shortly.
The Lightning port, introduced by Apple in 2012, has been lauded for its compact design and two-way plug capability. However, USB-C is now the new industry standard, offering several advantages such as faster data transfer and support for fast charging up to 100W. USB-C is widely adopted by many non-Apple devices, providing users with the convenience of using a single cable for various devices.
The shift to USB-C signifies an important progression for Apple, as it not only enhances performance but also aligns with global connectivity trends, ensuring uniformity across its entire device ecosystem.
