The iPhone 12 became the world’s best-selling 5G smartphone in October 2020, even though pre-orders opened in just half a month.

According to 9to5Mac, a report from Counterpoint Research shares the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, with the iPhone 12 accounting for 16% of the total global market while the iPhone 12 Pro has an additional 8%. The closest competitor is the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G at 4%. The top 10 smartphones are equipped with 3 Huawei models, 2 Oppo models, and 2 more Samsung phones.

Counterpoint said three factors explained the success of the iPhone 12, including the pent-up need for 5G upgrades, especially the iOS device platform; All carriers offer iPhone 12 with the price of 0 USD in combination with purchase packages; and the expansion of iPhone 12 in more than 140 countries.

The research firm also predicts that in the future, demand for the iPhone 12 series is likely to continue to increase until the end of quarter 4/2020, especially during the festive season in December. Apple will also boost production in the premium segment.

Finally, the report notes the iPhone 12 will spur investment in the mmWave variant of 5G at a faster rate, which is crucial to Apple’s future plans. The high throughput and low latency provided by mmWave will help unlock the true potential of 5G, laying a solid foundation for Apple to capitalize on the power of mmWave in segments like AR / VR.
