In the second quarter of 2024, Apple lost its position in the top 5 smartphone manufacturers in the Chinese market for the first time. The decline was attributed to the launch of the Huawei Mate60 series, Huawei’s resilience against US sanctions with its domestically produced handsets, and China’s ban on iPhones in government offices, replacing them with domestic alternatives.
During this period, Chinese manufacturers secured the top 5 positions in the rankings for the first time, with Vivo leading the market with a 19% share, followed by Oppo at 16%, Honor at 16%, Huawei at 15%, and Xiaomi at 14%.
Overall, smartphone sales in China increased by 10%, with 70.5 million units sold in the second quarter of 2024 compared to 64.3 million units in the same period last year. These developments highlighted the competitive landscape in the Chinese smartphone market and Apple’s plans to introduce a clamshell folding iPhone in 2026 to regain its competitive position.
