LG promises to launch a competitor to Apple Vision Pro glasses

LG leaders have revealed plans to launch a rival to Apple Vision Pro glasses in 2025.

According to TechRadar, LG announced it is bringing the company’s OLED TV expertise into the XR (extended reality) arena and plans to launch an unnamed device next year.

A report from Korea’s The Guru said that LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan told a CES 2024 (USA) reporter that ‘LG will launch an XR device as early as next year’. But it’s unclear whether it will be the Meta Quest Pro 2 glasses or a completely new device of the company’s own.

In February 2023, it was reported that Meta was looking to partner with LG to create an OLED display for its XR glasses – possibly the Meta Quest Pro 2, but possibly the Meta Quest 4.

If the Quest Pro 2 is in the works, it’s safe to assume that 2025 will be the earliest the tech world sees it. Meta has a habit of introducing new XR hardware a year in advance and usually makes announcements at its Meta Connect event in September or October, so the device will most likely be announced by the end of 2024 and 2025 release.

There is not much information on this device on the market; however, there were rumors late last year on Korean news sites that LG was developing a virtual reality (VR) headset powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. Similar rumors had also predicted exactly that Samsung XR/VR glasses will use this new chipset from Qualcomm, so there is a high possibility that LG will soon launch a new virtual reality product.

If LG’s virtual reality headset runs on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen, it will be a high-end product that can compete with the likes of the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. The selling price of the device can be up to more than 2,000 USD.

Overall, it’s highly likely that LG is working on an XR project without partnering with Meta. The Korean company possesses the world’s leading OLED screen production capabilities, in addition to its unrivaled home entertainment expertise, so creating an XR device under its brand is quite a feat. reasonable.
