MediaTek’s new chip promises to elevate Android phones

MediaTek has just officially introduced a new chip model for leading Android phones and challenged the dominance of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm.

According to Digitaltrends , MediaTek’s latest weapon is the Dimensity 9300 , a chip based on the 4nm process with a cluster of 4 top ARM cores that promises outstanding performance. Compared to direct competitor Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, MediaTek’s chip has an even more ambitious core configuration when equipped with up to 4 ARM Cortex-X4 cores, with 1 core clocked at up to 3.25 GHz and 3 remaining cores. back at 2.85 GHz. For less demanding tasks, it is handled by an ARM Cortex-A710 core cluster.

The Cortex-X4 core cluster powers across synthetic benchmarks, allowing the Dimensity 9300 to deliver incredible results on Geekbench 6, AnTuTu as well as the gaming-focused GFXBench.

The Dimensity 9300 can support displays reaching a maximum refresh rate of 180 Hz, with 4K panels able to refresh at up to 120 Hz. The chip integrates Wi-Fi 7 connectivity as well as a specialized security chip to safely boot the operating system.

In terms of innovation dedicated to AI (artificial intelligence), MediaTek’s latest flagship mobile chip comes with an AI engine that doubles AI performance in certain metrics, while consuming less 45% more energy. The APU 790 integrated inside the chip also provides power 8 times faster than its predecessor.

MediaTek has also tweaked the memory architecture and claims the chip can run large language models with up to 13 billion parameters and is scalable up to 33 billion. By comparison, Qualcomm’s new and most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can only run AI models with up to 10 billion parameters.

Dimensity 9300 also supports major multimodal language models such as Meta’s Llama 2, Baidu LLM and many others. However, the chip’s focus is still on competing with Qualcomm in the battle for general AI tasks, including text, images and audio.

On the graphics front, the Dimensity 9300 is based on the new 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU which promises to be 46% faster and 40% more power efficient. MediaTek is also working on gaming-centric perks like ray tracing technology that delivers 60fps gaming with console-grade lighting effects.

The image signal processor enables 4K HDR video recording at up to 60 fps and supports real-time bokeh in 4K video. Dimensity 9300 focuses on native capabilities such as AI-powered object detection, dynamic quality adjustment in video, and pixel-level autofocus.

MediaTek says the first phones equipped with Dimensity 9300 will appear later this year. This could include the Vivo X100 series. upcoming
