The company will stop providing new features as well as phase out social interaction features.
According to VGC, Meta has announced plans to end support for its first version of the virtual reality headset Meta Quest. While owners will still be able to use the device and pre-existing apps, the company will no longer offer new features to the Quest in the future.
In an email about the upcoming change, Meta said users will not be able to create or join groups, and that users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home’s social features will lose access. This update is dated 5/3/2023.
Meta will continue to maintain the system software with critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024.
The first version of Meta’s Quest virtual reality headset launched in May 2019 and its successor in October 2020. Meta raised the selling price for Quest 2 in August 2022 (up by $100) due to the high costs required to manufacture and ship the product.
A big competitor of Quest 2 is currently on the way to users, whereby Sony will launch PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023, for $ 549.99 (about 12.9 million), the virtual reality headset of Sony will have a PS VR2 Sense controller and stereo headset included.
