Microsoft has decided to shut down all its retail stores in mainland China. This strategic move is part of Microsoft’s plan to readjust its business operations in the country. While Microsoft Stores in China will no longer function, customers can still purchase Microsoft hardware products through the company’s online store and various retail partners.
This shift in strategy indicates that Microsoft will now concentrate on working with third-party retailers and enhancing its online presence rather than directly operating retail stores in China. This move comes as Microsoft is globally restructuring its business operations, following its closure of most retail stores worldwide in 2020 while keeping some key locations open, such as those in London, New York, and Sydney.
In addition to closing stores, Microsoft is also relocating some of its employees from China to other countries. According to Microsoft President Brad Smith, revenue from China currently accounts for only 1.5% of the company’s total revenue. Although Microsoft has not officially commented on this development, the closure of stores in China signifies the company’s shift in focus towards online sales and partnerships rather than maintaining a physical retail presence in the Chinese market.
