Older Xbox consoles won’t receive new games, but owners will still be able to play them via the cloud.
According to Engadget, the life cycle of the Xbox Series X / S game console has been 3 years so far, and recently, Microsoft has said it will no longer produce games for the Xbox One. While the company still supports titles like Minecraft and Halo Infinite for the device, the Xbox Game Studios development team won’t be working on new titles for older consoles in the future
This move is a must to help keep new games from being hindered by the hardware limitations of the Xbox One. However, Xbox One users will still be able to play Series X/S titles like Starfield and Forza Motorsport through the Xbox Cloud Gaming cloud service.
The news comes after Xbox’s impressive performance at its big annual rollout last weekend. The company announced new titles like South of Midnight and Clockwork Revolution and provided fresh looks at titles like Fable, Avowed, and Saga: Hellblade II.
Discontinuing game production for the Xbox One will free Microsoft’s development teams from the shackles of older-generation hardware. However, some third-party developers have expressed concern that the Xbox Series S (less powerful than Series X) is also holding them back.
Microsoft admits that making sure games run well on the Series S requires more work from the company. However, the company also notes that its studios can still do a good job of optimizing projects for the Series S
