Microsoft Edge browser is about to have a gamer mode

A new Windows update has indicated that Microsoft may be considering a gaming version for the Edge browser.

According to Dexerto, a Twitter user recently found a new setting in the Canary beta of the Microsoft Edge browser. Dubbed ‘Edge for Gamers’, this option, when enabled, will redirect users to Microsoft’s add-on store, and the Twitch and Discord apps will also be added to the browser’s sidebar.

Microsoft has long been trying to make the company’s browser more popular. However, this Chromium-based browser still has a hard time becoming the default browser on Windows 10 and 11 computers, despite the recent addition of new AI features from OpenAI and ChatGPT

It’s not clear what’s behind the ‘Edge for Gamers’ option, or what other use it is for integrating the Discord and Twitch apps into the browser. But this move shows that Microsoft is going head-to-head with Opera in the area of browser-focused gaming experiences.

The Opera browser (which also works on Chromium) is offering a version called Opera GX, designed specifically for video game players on Microsoft Windows and macOS. Microsoft’s new move may be planning to integrate a gamer version or test features for a secondary browser in the future.

Additionally, Opera acquired GameMaker in 2021, adding strength to its list of game-focused software
