Microsoft has announced the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI)–powered text editing feature called “Rewrite” for its Notepad application. This feature is currently available in the Windows 11 operating system preview as part of the Windows Insider program.
According to the official Windows Insider blog, the Rewrite feature allows users to modify text by interpreting sentences, adjusting the tone, and varying the content length. To utilize this feature, Notepad users need to select a segment of text, right-click, and choose “Rewrite.” A dialog box will then appear, offering options to alter the text, such as making it shorter or longer. Users will be presented with three edited versions of the original text to select from.
It is important to note that users must log in with a Microsoft account to access the Rewrite feature, as it operates in a cloud-based environment requiring authentication. Currently, this feature is limited to users in specific countries participating in the Windows Insider program, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Germany.
In addition to the updates to Notepad, Microsoft is also exploring new AI-driven editing tools for the Paint application. The “Generative Fill” feature enables users to add elements to images based on text descriptions, while “Generative Erase” facilitates the removal of specific parts of an image, seamlessly blending the remaining areas. Generative Fill will be accessible to PC testers within the Copilot Plus ecosystem, while Generative Erase will be available to all members of the Windows Insider program for Windows 11.
Earlier this year, in July, Microsoft enhanced Notepad by integrating spell-checking capabilities and automatic error correction functions, further improving the overall user experience.
