OpenAI has recently unveiled “GPT-4o mini,” the latest advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Marketed as the most powerful and cost-effective “mini” version available today, the GPT-4o mini is poised to supersede GPT-3.5 Turbo and become OpenAI’s most compact AI model. Building on the capabilities of GPT-4, GPT-4o is heralded as OpenAI’s fastest and most potent AI model, with enhanced features in text, image, and sound processing. The “o” in the name “GPT-4o” stands for the Latin word “omni,” signifying “omnipotent.”
Essentially, GPT-4o is a multimodal AI model designed to facilitate more natural human-computer interaction through ChatGPT. Meanwhile, GPT-4o mini is a smaller version that expands the application range of chatbots like ChatGPT with data updated until October 2023.
For developers using OpenAI’s API, the company charges $0.15 per 1 million input tokens and $0.60 per 1 million output tokens. OpenAI emphasizes that the operational costs of GPT-4o mini are significantly lower than previous versions, particularly 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo.
With its improved modeling, GPT-4o mini offers faster and more cost-effective performance compared to large language models like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. This model is expected to gain popularity among developers and corporate customers.
GPT-4o mini will become accessible to free ChatGPT users, as well as ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team members, starting from July 18. Furthermore, the model will be launched for developers, including its release on Microsoft Azure AI, and will continue to be available for ChatGPT Enterprise users next week.
GPT-4o mini signifies OpenAI’s significant effort to lead the market for multimodal models. With this tool, the platform can deliver a diverse range of AI-generated content, encompassing text, images, audio, and video.
