OpenAI releases free ChatGPT app for Mac

OpenAI has officially released the ChatGPT app for macOS, which was announced earlier this year at the company’s “Spring Event.” The app is powered by the new GPT-4o model and enables users to interact with the AI chatbot using their voice. Users can sign in to the ChatGPT app on their Mac using a Google or Microsoft email account. With this app, users can access ChatGPT more conveniently than the website, as they can use the Option + Space keyboard shortcut to activate the app from any screen and use a search bar similar to Apple’s Spotlight feature to type their queries.

The app supports various input methods, including uploading files, and photos, and taking screenshots of a window or the entire screen. Users can also select a piece of text in a document and give ChatGPT a prompt. Additionally, users can initiate a temporary chat, enable a spell checker, and manage ChatGPT features using the menu bar at the top of the app. They can also access their previous conversations with ChatGPT using the left sidebar.

The app is currently available for free to users of macOS 14 and above

The ChatGPT app for macOS is available as a free download and is exclusively available for ChatGPT Plus users. It is compatible with devices running macOS 14 or later with an Apple Silicon M1 chip or later. OpenAI has also confirmed that the ChatGPT app for Windows will be launched later this year.
