The success of GTA Online has come at the expense of GTA 5’s anticipated story DLC. Reports from Tech4Gamers revealed that Rockstar Games had originally planned to expand GTA 5’s storyline with additional DLC. However, the overwhelming triumph of GTA Online led the company to shift its focus entirely to the online mode, abandoning the development of story-based DLC expansions.
According to former Rockstar camera artist and cinematographer Joseph Rubino, he had worked on a DLC centered around the character Trevor and had completed nearly half of the project. However, the emergence of GTA Online prompted Rockstar to halt this DLC, along with several other story expansions, in favor of concentrating on online mode content.
This decision sparked controversy within the fan community. While some supported Rockstar’s choice due to the immense success of GTA Online, many others expressed disappointment at the missed opportunity for new stories within the world of GTA 5.
Irrespective of the divided opinions, GTA Online has undeniably emerged as one of the most prosperous online modes in the history of video games. With over 50 substantial and minor updates in the last decade, GTA Online has continually evolved and attracted millions of players worldwide.
Nevertheless, the shelving of GTA 5’s story DLC has left many fans yearning for more. Whether Rockstar will make similar decisions with GTA 6 remains a closely watched question.
