Samsung develops energy-saving smartphone screens

Samsung is at the forefront of developing an OLED screen without a polarizing film, promising significant energy savings with less than half the current power consumption. The Vice President of Samsung Display, Chung Yi, unveiled this breakthrough at the IMID 2024 exhibition during a keynote speech on the “Sustainable development of displays with AI (artificial intelligence).” This innovation is particularly significant for mobile devices, as it directly impacts battery life, with the screen and processor being the main culprits for power drainage during usage.

The new power-saving panel from Samsung is expected to enhance the battery life of flagship phones, potentially enabling them to operate for more than 24 hours even under heavy usage. Despite the drastic reduction in power consumption, the new panel promises vibrant image quality that mimics reality and a large screen design while maintaining the essential portability required in the era of AI-powered screens.

This advancement aligns with Samsung’s strategic focus on providing displays for next-generation devices that can meet the demands of AI-driven tasks. The push for high-resolution displays is crucial for handling AI imaging tasks, with a need for natural detail and accurate color representation that exceeds the capabilities of real-world cameras. The design requirements also include thin, light, and flexible displays that cater to a variety of aesthetics, accompanied by additional functionalities such as low power consumption to further optimize AI services.

The achievement of reducing energy consumption by 50% compared to current OLED panels is significant, especially in the context of mobile devices, where battery technology has seen limited improvement.
