Samsung’s interest in this segment was sparked by the launch of the world’s first folding-screen smartphone, the Mate XT, by Huawei. Following this, several Chinese manufacturers, including OPPO and Tecno, have also entered the market with their own folding devices.
According to recent reports, Samsung plans to unveil its three-fold smartphone next year. Details regarding this device have emerged from the US Patent and Trademark Office, which revealed that the relevant patent was filed back in 2021 and has recently been approved. Industry rumors suggest that the development of this product is gaining momentum.
An insider source cited by the Korean website ET News indicates that Samsung is in the process of developing a tri-fold smartphone, with design and prototype work expected to be completed by the end of the month. The source mentioned that the tri-fold smartphone has been added to Samsung’s development portfolio, and collaborations with partners are also underway.
The anticipated tri-fold smartphone is expected to feature a screen size of approximately 9 to 10 inches when opened, which is two inches larger than the current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. When fully opened, the device will resemble a tablet, similar to the design of the Huawei Mate XT. However, Samsung’s design will include two inward folds, contrasting with the Mate XT’s design which includes one inward fold and one outward fold. This choice may be influenced by concerns regarding the device’s reliability.
As the market for three-fold smartphones continues to grow and become increasingly competitive, Samsung is positioning itself to capitalize on this emerging opportunity.
