Samsung recently showcased its latest devices at the Unpacked event in Paris, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and health monitoring. The highlight of the event was the Galaxy AI platform, which offers various AI capabilities related to health and fitness apps, photo services, productivity, and web browsing.
The strategy behind Samsung’s Galaxy AI is to bolster its AI efforts to drive future device sales, particularly in the face of competition from Apple’s upcoming AI software suite for the iPhone 16 series.
The new Samsung devices, including foldable smartphones and smartwatches, are designed to highlight AI capabilities across each product. For instance, the Galaxy Ring, Watch7, and Watch Ultra feature the new Energy Score feature, which uses Galaxy AI to calculate sleep time and recent exercise to provide users with a numerical representation of their overall fitness level.
Additionally, Galaxy AI offers language translation features and generative AI capabilities in the photo app, allowing users to perform tasks like adding realistic-looking sunglasses to people in photos and integrating Google’s AI capabilities.
Samsung’s motivation behind integrating AI into its latest hardware products is to differentiate them from older devices, with the hope that Galaxy AI’s features will encourage customers to upgrade to new devices, potentially creating a new revenue stream for the company through future Galaxy AI services.
Samsung’s plan to bring Galaxy AI to previous generation products, such as the Galaxy S22 series, Z Fold4, Z Flip4, S23, Z Fold5, and Z Flip5, aims to keep customers engaged and motivated to stick with Samsung and continue taking advantage of its AI features. However, the company needs to be cautious, as charging for AI services could potentially have implications if Apple does not choose to do so.
