Tencent acquires studio Turtle Rock

The development studio behind the game Back 4 Blood has been acquired by the giant Tencent.

According to Engadget, conglomerate Tencent Chinese has bought or invested in more than 100 video game-related companies this year. The latest acquisition targets the studio that developed the title Back 4 Blood, Turtle Rock.

This is another notable additional move by Tencent after acquiring Slamfire, the parent company of Turtle Rock, for an undisclosed amount. Turtle Rock is the studio that has developed titles like Left 4 Dead, Evolve, and most recently Back 4 Blood. Co-founders Phil Robb and Chris Ashton will continue to run the studio.

“By joining the Tencent family, we will not only gain access to their vast resources and expertise, but will also find a partner that gives us the drive, ambition, and expertise to achieve. further vision,” wrote Turtle Rock in a blog post. The studio says it’s expanding its team to increase support for Back 4 Blood and create other multiplayer experiences.

Tencent has made even bigger strides in the gaming space this year. The conglomerate acquired LittleBigPlanet 3 developer Sumo Group this summer for $1.26 billion. According to analyst Daniel Ahmad, the company has bought or invested in more than 100 gaming-related companies in 2021 alone.
