According to recent reports from Tianfeng International analyst Ming-chi Kuo, Apple is planning to release its first folding-screen MacBook earlier than anticipated, with an expected launch in 2026 instead of the previously predicted 2027. The new folding screen MacBook is likely to feature an 18.8-inch panel, replacing the previously rumored 20.3-inch panel. When folded, the 20.3-inch panel will resemble the current 14-15-inch MacBook, while the 18.8-inch panel will closely resemble the 13-14-inch version.

Ming-chi Kuo also mentioned that Apple is aiming to minimize wrinkles on the screen, which imposes high demands on the design parameters of the panel and hinge. As a result, the cost of the panel and hinge is estimated to be around $600 and $200 respectively. It’s anticipated that these costs may decrease if productivity improves during mass production. However, in the short term, the high cost of the panel and hinge may contribute to a higher price for the MacBook.

If Apple fails to improve productivity and reduce costs before mass production, the price of the folding-screen MacBook could be close to that of the current Vision Pro, starting at $3,499. Despite the high anticipated price, the folding screen MacBook is expected to have a clearer market positioning, leading to significantly higher shipments than the Vision Pro. Ming-chi Kuo predicts that shipments could surpass 1 million units by 2026.
