TikTok is continuing to oppose the US ban by refuting any association with China. TechSpot reports that TikTok has once again dismissed the US Department of Justice’s claims regarding its ties to China. The popular short-video social network is seeking to challenge the law in federal court which could potentially result in its banishment from the United States.
TikTok asserts that both its content recommendation engine and user data are stored within the US on Oracle’s cloud servers. Furthermore, content moderation decisions also originate within the US, negating any suggestion of data being transmitted to China.
On the other hand, the US Department of Justice contends that TikTok’s content management decisions constitute “foreign speech,” and are not protected by the Constitution. TikTok disputes this assertion, arguing that it infringes upon freedom of speech.
Reportedly, TikTok has proposed a ‘kill switch’ that would grant the US government the ability to promptly shut down the platform in the event of violations. However, this seemingly fails to assuage the concerns of US agencies. The future of TikTok in the US remains uncertain, as the legal battle may protract, but it is evident that the app is unwavering in its determination to safeguard its presence in one of the world’s largest markets.
