US stops granting export licenses to Huawei

The administration of US President Joe Biden has stopped approving licenses for US companies to export most items to Huawei.

According to Reuters, Huawei has faced US export restrictions on goods for 5G and other technologies over the past few years, but US Commerce Department officials still issue licenses to some companies. Chinese companies sell certain goods and technologies to Huawei. This includes Qualcomm, which is authorized to sell 4G chips to Huawei smartphones.

But now, a source involved with the Commerce Department’s licensing issues said that US officials have now created a new denial policy for shipping items to Huawei, including Huawei. sub-5G items such as 4G, Wi-Fi 6/7, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and cloud.

Another source said the move is believed to reflect the administration’s tighter policies towards Huawei over the past year. This person said that the license for the 4G chip was denied, while earlier this was approved by licensing categories specific to 4G applications.

US officials put Huawei on a Commerce Department blacklist in 2019 that restricts most US suppliers from shipping goods and technology to Huawei unless they are licensed. These officials then further tightened controls to cut off Huawei’s ability to buy or design semiconductors to power most of its products.

Even so, they still license Huawei to buy some products. For example, between April and November 2021, Huawei spent $61 billion on US suppliers to get some licenses for use in the Chinese company’s products.

At the end of December 2022, Huawei said its total revenue was about $ 91.53 billion, a slight decrease from 2021 – when US sanctions caused the company’s revenue to drop by nearly a third.
