Jon DiMaggio, a researcher at Analyst1, created a fictitious cybercriminal persona to gain the trust of Dmitry Khoroshev, known by the nickname LockBitSupp. After months of meticulous interaction and evidence gathering, DiMaggio was able to identify Khoroshev as the mastermind behind LockBit. Instead of immediately disclosing this information, he collaborated with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to strategize the next steps.
Following the FBI’s counsel to wait, the US Department of Justice officially revealed Khoroshev’s identity. Subsequently, DiMaggio published a comprehensive report on his investigation, shedding light on Khoroshev’s details. Throughout the investigation, DiMaggio faced significant challenges and psychological pressure.
