Xiaomi is preparing to launch its first custom 3nm chip next year, and there are growing questions regarding the choice of a 5G modem partner for this system-on-chip (SoC). The selection process is particularly critical given the potential trade sanctions from the US that could impact the project.
Recent information shared by a “Mobile phone chip expert” user on Weibo suggests that Xiaomi may collaborate with MediaTek for its 3nm chip initiative. This source has a history of accurate predictions in the semiconductor industry, indicating a reliable connection to insider information. According to the account, Xiaomi’s custom 3nm chip is expected to feature the MediaTek T90 5G modem.
However, details about the T90 modem are currently unavailable on MediaTek’s official website, which suggests that it is an unreleased product. This could suggest that Xiaomi aims to enhance the wireless capabilities of its new SoC to better compete against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G modem.
MediaTek has made notable advancements in the chip sector, particularly with the launch of the Dimensity 9400, which is the first chip to be mass-produced using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process. If Xiaomi successfully partners with MediaTek for the T90 modem, it could leverage TSMC’s cutting-edge lithography technology.
Despite the ongoing speculation, many aspects of Xiaomi’s 3nm chip development remain unclear. Regardless of the outcome, there is widespread hope that Xiaomi can successfully reduce its reliance on Qualcomm and other partners while navigating the challenges posed by potential US restrictions.
