YouTube develops facial and voice deepfake detection tool

YouTube has recently announced its intention to create a new technology that will be able to detect AI-generated content that utilizes the faces and voices of individuals without their permission, commonly referred to as “deepfakes.” The initial testing for the voice detection tool is set to begin in early 2025.

The facial detection technology aims to help individuals in various fields such as actors, singers, athletes, and creators identify and manage content that features their image, which has been generated by AI. This tool is expected to assist users in tracking and taking action against videos that use deepfake versions of their likeness. While an official release date for the facial detection technology has not been disclosed, YouTube claims that it will be launched in the future.

Furthermore, the AI-generated vocal detection technology is set to be integrated into the Content ID system, which is an automated copyright protection system. This tool will enable YouTube partners to detect and manage content featuring synthetic, AI-generated vocal versions.

Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s Vice President of Creative Products, has stressed the need for AI to enhance human creativity rather than replace it. He mentioned that YouTube is dedicated to collaborating with partners to ensure that future advancements amplify their voices. The platform also aims to continue developing protections to address concerns and achieve shared goals.

As artificial intelligence continues to advance, the protection of copyright and personal rights in the digital environment has become an increasingly urgent issue. Therefore, the development of tools to identify deepfake content by YouTube is a noteworthy step forward. This initiative is specifically designed to safeguard creators and artists against unauthorized use of their images and voices in videos.
