According to a Reuters survey in collaboration with market research firm Ipsos, conducted with 4,415 Americans, more than two-thirds of Americans believe that the rapid development of AI could threaten human civilization.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has started the race to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with the participation of technology “giants” such as Google or Microsoft. Therefore, the widespread integration of AI into daily life has attracted the interest and concern of many people.

Lawmakers and AI companies are also concerned about the technology’s potential risks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at a hearing before the US Congress on May 16 expressed his concern about the risk of misuse of AI technology. He proposed setting up a supervisory body and issuing regulations to control this technology

According to data from Reuters, 61% of respondents believe that AI will pose a risk to humanity, while only 22% disagree and 17% are uncertain.

Landon Klein, US policy director for the Future of Life Institute (FLI) – the organization behind the open letter calling for a six-month pause in AI development – said a lot of Americans are worried about the negative impact of AI.

However, there are still other opinions that the public should learn more about the benefits of AI. Sebastian Thrun, the founder of Google X, says the concerns are very legitimate, but he believes AI will improve the quality of people’s lives while helping people work more efficiently.

Ion Stoica – co-founder of AI company Anyscale said, besides ChatGPT, AI also has other positive applications such as finding and developing new drugs. He said Americans may not realize how pervasive AI is in their daily lives, both at home and at work
