Apple plans to add crash detection to the iPhone and Apple Watch in 2022, which allows it to automatically dial 911.
According to BGR, the iPhone and Apple Watch will use both integrated sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes to accurately predict a crash, which triggers the 911 for an emergency call.
A report from the Wall Street Journal said that Apple tests the functionality of the past year. For program participants, they will use iPhones and Apple watches to share anonymous data with Apple, although it is not clear how data is shared. According to the document, Apple devices have detected more than 10 million accidents of the suspected car, with more than 50,000 of them calling a 911 call.
To improve the accuracy of the crash detection algorithm, Apple has also collected call data, which helps Apple ensure that affected users actually had an accident.
Back in 2018, Apple introduced a drop detection function for the Apple watch. If Apple Watch detects that the user fell sharply, it will display an alert. Users can interact with the alert to call emergency services if necessary. If the watch detects an elongated owner still for a minute after a fall, it will automatically call 911. This feature has saved many lives since its deployment.
Now, auto accident detection will work in a similar way. With the rollout of crash alerts on both the iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple intends to make customers’ lives safer and more secure.
