Along with the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max duo – two handsets with a pill-shaped cut + hole instead of the current notch.
Both devices have a faster A16 Bionic chip and an Always On display. CEO Tim Cook calls it the most innovative professional product line ever. The iPhone 14 Pro price starts at $999, while the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $1,099. Both can be pre-ordered on September 9 and on shelves from September 16.
The first notable design change of the iPhone 14 Pro series is that the screen with the notch is removed to replace a pill-shaped cutout for the Face ID components and a hole for the selfie camera. Apple calls this system Dynamic Island, with the proximity sensors moved behind the screen. Notifications and alerts will adapt and move around the pill-shaped punch.
The duo comes with an Always On the screen that works with the new lock screen widget feature in iOS 16, allowing support for information like reminders, calendar events, and weather. It even has a sleep state for iOS 16 wallpapers, which can darken them to use less battery.
iPhone 14 Pro models are equipped with an A16 Bionic chip with 6 CPU cores, including 2 high-performance and four energy-saving cores. This new chip helps deliver the smooth animations found in Dynamic Island and powers Apple’s new camera system.
Apple also switched to the iPhone’s 12MP to 48MP camera system for the first time in the iPhone 14 Pro series, allowing for improvements in low-light photography by combining four pixels into one. For most shots, the sensor takes pixel binning to optimize low-light with 12 MP image quality, delivering zoom at the 48mm focal length. This results in more impressive photos and optimized details in the ProRAW format.
The ultra-wide camera system offers improvements in macro photography as well as low light. The flash system on the rear camera has also been redesigned to provide twice the amount of light and respond to the image’s focal length. iPhone 14 Pro series can record Cinematic Mode videos at 4K 30fps and 4K 20fps.
