The Washington Post has just revealed that former US President Donald Trump wanted to sell his social network Truth to billionaire Elon Musk last summer. The negotiations have been kept secret from that point until now, but the proposal has achieved nothing.
The Truth social network was launched by Mr. Trump in February 2022, more than a year after Twitter (currently X) deleted his account after the riot on January 6, 2021. Truth is said to be a copy of X with some minor changes, for example, instead of ‘tweets’ and ‘retweets’, Truth uses ‘truth’ and ‘retruth’.
In 2023, the platform fell short of funding and could not attract enough advertising revenue to balance itself financially. From 2021 to mid-2023, Mr. Trump’s project recorded a net loss of $31.6 million.
After becoming the owner of Twitter, billionaire Musk restored Mr. Trump’s account, but the former US president only posted information on this social network that he preferred Truth Social. He also returned to being active on Facebook after Meta restored his page.
Billionaire Musk and Mr. Trump then continued to communicate with each other without revealing the nature of the conversation related to the purchase and sale of the Truth social network. However, Mr. Musk explained on X that he will “not donate money to any presidential candidate in the US”.
