Windows 10 features updates to save storage space

Microsoft is testing a new feature that Windows 10 users can use to host apps to save space on their computers.

According to Hindustantime Tech, this feature is called “Archive apps” and is being tested in the latest version by Windows Insiders. Hence, Windows 10 detects unused apps and automatically backs them up without the user having to do it manually.

“Archive apps” will be available in the settings menu and users can simply turn it on or off. If it is enabled then apps that are not used frequently will be put into the cached state automatically. This won’t delete your app data, Windows 10 will still keep your files and other data even if the app is in an archived state.

In case the user wants to restore any application, that application will be connected to the internet and restored. This feature is similar to what Apple’s iOS does with apps that are not in use. It offloads these applications but retains data, and the user can always restore it.

The new feature will roll out with the Windows 21H1 update, expected to be available next year. The exact date for the release is not yet set but could be around spring 2021. However, it is reported that Microsoft may not release it until the second half of next year.

Similar to this feature, Microsoft is also making better cleaning recommendations on Windows 10. The new cleanup proposal will generate a list of apps, files, and personal data that aren’t used frequently. . The list can be sorted by date and it will be easier to identify what is needed and what is not. Similar to “Archive apps”, this new feature is also aimed at cleaning up space on your PC.
